Has Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis been scientifically proven?

The most accurate answer is: not yet as a standardized diagnostic system. But the question has been studied, and the results are more nuanced than either “proven” or “pseudoscience.”

Traditional observation → defined concept → measurable question → research → unanswered questions.

The radial pulse unquestionably contains physical information. Contemporary medicine measures rate, rhythm, amplitude, regularity, vascular characteristics, arterial stiffness, and waveform morphology.

The open question is how much of the information interpreted through Nadi Pariksha can be objectively characterized, reproduced, and clinically validated.

Repeatability

Kurande et al. reported a blinded study in which an expert Ayurvedic physician examined 17 healthy participants twice. Weighted kappa for pulse diagnosis was approximately 0.42, interpreted by the authors as moderate agreement.

Important limitation: Small study; one expert; healthy participants; no independent biological gold standard.

Agreement between practitioners

Related Kurande analyses of a cohort involving 15 registered Ayurvedic physicians and 20 healthy subjects reported average pairwise weighted kappa of approximately 0.07 for pulse assessment. Reliability ranged from poor to moderate.

Important limitation: The two publications report closely related work rather than independent replications. Skill, technique, training, lineage, and interpretation may all contribute to variability.

Objective pulse measurement

Nadi Tarangini demonstrated that arterial waveforms at traditional Nadi locations can be recorded digitally.

Important limitation: Digitizing physical pulse information does not, by itself, validate every traditional interpretation.

Tridosha position differences

Investigators analyzed 42 usable pulse-wave samples obtained from recordings at traditional Vata, Pitta, and Kapha locations and reported statistically significant differences in stiffness index and reflection index.

Important limitation: The methodology began with 90 participants without diabetes, but only recordings with adequate systolic and diastolic peaks were retained. Measurable position differences do not prove that the positions represent the complete biological entities Ayurveda calls Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Hypertension agreement

A 160-person study reported 95% agreement between an expert Maharishi Nādi-Vigyān assessment of hypertension and classification based on conventional blood-pressure measurement. Agreement for self-reported secondary outcomes was approximately three-quarters.

Important limitation: This was an observational, cross-sectional study using a specific Maharishi methodology, one expert-practitioner setting, and a single clinical context. Some secondary outcomes relied on self-report, independent replication is needed, and the findings should not be generalized to every Nadi Pariksha lineage.

Digital and sensor research

A 2024 review identified 67 research papers investigating sensor-based Nadi measurement, signal processing, feature extraction, classification, and related applications.

Important limitation: The review found substantial technological activity but identified standardization, reproducibility, methodology, and clinical validation as important remaining challenges. It did not show that 67 studies had validated Nadi Pariksha.
